The Orkan Dictionary is a list of words and their meanings from the science-fiction comedy series Mork & Mindy.
As outlined in the novelization of the first few episodes of the show. the Orkan language often has numerous words for the same thing (e.g. Yes, No, and various types of behavior). Words can be given formal or casual meanings, and can often carry different shades of meaning, sometimes being benign, sometimes malevolent.
Common Words[]
- Bleam (also spelled bleem) - Distance of a billion light years or 2000 Earth years on the planet Ork. This word is used frequently in a variety of situations, making a precise definition impossible.
- Nanu - Like "aloha," this is a dual-meaning formal greeting when Orkans say, "Hello" or "Goodbye." Generally (but not always) said twice: "Nanu, Nanu". Upon introduction, it's combined with an Orkan handshake, snf when greeting Orson, Mork twists his interchangeable screw-on ears. There are numerous variations in spelling throughout the Mork & Mindy franchise, but Na-Nu has become the accepted version, in part because Mork (Robin Williams) deviated from the script, which denoted "na-no, na-no." mocking Orson for spelling something pronounced 'nu' as n.o.
- Nimnul - Insult, implying that the one being insulted has low intelligence, roughly akin to "dummy" or "idiot".
- Shazbot! - A swear word, used as an exclamation. There is no precise translation, but it's roughly akin to "shit" or "damn".
