When first mentioned (Mork Runs Away) Mork describes them as small green creatures that exist in herds, that Orkans put on their heads to graze, giving them haircuts by default.
When we first actually encounter a Naugachomp (Putting the Ork Back in Mork), in Mork's pet Bebo, while he is certainly small, and definitely has a penchant for eating hair, he is not green. Nor is he small enough to be put on one's head (or escape down the back of one's neck). However, Mork informs Mindy that Naugachomps grow to be 100 feet high. So (assuming he's not joking) it may be they start out small (and green) and gradually grow larger (and more 'polyester' brown/furry looking) as they get larger and larger.
Along with Hibijonees, and Frankels (Cocker and otherwise), Naugachomps serve as some of the more popular pets on Orkans. Both Mork (Mork's New Look) and Xerko (There's A New Mork In Town) are seen playing with Bebo, and much like Earth Dogs, Naugachomps respond to commands and apparently can do tricks.
