Ellsworth played by David Letterman, is the Founder of Ellsworth Revitalization Konditioning or ERK a self help / self worth, con job, who Mork & Mindy encounter through Susan Taylor in her misguided effort to try and cheer them up.
About Ellsworth[]
Ellsworth is an out and out Conman, whose only interest is in money (and his Rolls Royce), who has devised a so called 'Konditioning' self help scheme, which basically consists of taking people's money and telling them to be selfish, to tell other people their concerns are simply 'concepts' and his (or yours) are 'realities'. Any questions or queries of his concepts or his rules are dealt with a simple 'Sit down and shut up' another concept he encourages others to say to others (just not to him).
His self love concept is bought in to, rather unsurprisingly, by Susan Taylor who, in a well meaning if misguided attempt to cheer up Mork, Mindy and Mr. Bickley. Mork and Mindy because Mork has informed Mindy that he has decided to go even though Orson has decided he can stay, because he feels it will only get even harder for her the longer he stays (whereas it won't bother him at all, he says). Mr. Bickley is invited along because he has a work blockage and is dejected about it.
Ellsworth's session is held at Susan's Apartment with about dozen people in attendance, and his methods are immediately queried by both Mork & Mindy, who are dismiised with his 'Sit Down & Shut Up' method. Mr. Bickley sticks it through, until Ellsworth informs him that he can't drink his bourbon, as going to the toilet, eating and drinking are forbidden through the long session. Presumably a technique to wear down those present. And it wears down Mr. Bickley pretty quickly on discovering it, as he gets up with his flask of Bourbon and walks out, telling Ellsworth he's going to get a surprise when he tries to cash his check.
When Mork finally dismantles Ellsworth's smug set up, by telling those present that being honest with yourself, knowing, trusting and liking yourself being all you really need to be happy and resilient. When those present begin to disregard his rules and the session starts to break up, Ellsworth is supremely unconcerned, as he already has their money...and his Rolls Royce. And leaves. Only to discover that his Rolls has been stolen.
Mork telling him not worry about it as losing his Rolls is a concept, getting it back is a reality.
Ellsworth's session does have one meritorious outcome however, in that Mork's heartfelt speech to those present, tells Mindy all she needs to know of the truth of why Mork is leaving...as it's him that won't be able to handle leaving, his emotions starting to take a hold of him. Something he admits with shame...until she kisses him...and he races off to tell Orson he's staying.
