About Dittman[]
Dittman is a small mousey man who along with a friend makes a break from freedom from Boulder Prison. Both of them are pursued along the Pearl Street Mall area past the McConnell's Music Store where Mork is briefly alone, Mindy having asked him watch the store while she headed to the Bank. A few moments later the highly eloquent Officer Ed Boyd, returns with Dittman in in his custody.
He cuffs Dittman, to the railing just inside the door, that he is off to apprehend Dittman's accomplice forthwith. Asking Mork to keep an eye on Dittman he heads out, and Mork gets up close to do what he's asked, before Dittman tells him to back off, having had a crummy day. He tells Mork how he started his life of crime small, as a shop lifter, before graduating to stealing cars, eventually getting caught and banged up.
Now his mother is sick and he made a break to go see her, but now it looks like he wont' ever see her again. Mork, who Mindy has already warned about his gullibility, is immediately hit by a wave of empathy, believing him entirely, and asks if there's anything he can do to help. Dittman facetiously suggests he could let him out of his cuffs. Mork is inclined to help him out, feeling every son should see his mother, but pauses remembering Officer Boyd wanted Dittman to wait there. But Dittman assures Mork that he'll be back. Mork secures a promise and an assurance the police officer won't mind Dittman tells him, and suggests he'll be back by 2pm the following day.
Mork accepting it at face value, raises his finger and breaks Dittman's cuffs. Stunned by it, Dittman doesn't have time to hang around to find out how Mork did that, and heads out, but not before he manages to convince Mork to lend him some money, though Mork only gives him 5 then the 10 he requests, so as not to appear gullible. On Mindy's return she's appalled to discover what Mork's done, and despite her best efforts Officer Boyd arrests Mork for helping an escaped criminal.
Everyone, including Exidor who Mork encounters in jail think that Mork's been beyond foolish in accepting the word of a long term con that he would come back. Especially after 2pm comes and goes and it's almost 2.45 and there' still no sign of him. When the doors to the jail open and Dittman walks in with Officer Boyd, having turned himself in, exactly as he said he would. Apologizing to Mork for the delay he gives him greetings from his mother and thanks. Fred, mystified, asks Dittman why he turned himself in. He promised Mork he tells them, he maybe a thief but he's not a liar, he couldn't let Mork get in trouble for helping him, he was the only person who trusted him bar his mother, and she hides her jewelry. Mindy opining to her father that maybe they get out of people what they expect of them
Despite Mork still having committed a crime, Officer Boyd agrees to speak to the judge about the extenuating circumstances in the case, later seeing him freed.
