Boulder Reservoir is a 700-acre man made lake built in the mid 1950s whose initial purpose was the storage of irrigation and drinking water. However the reservoir quickly became the region's most popular destination for boating, swimming and fishing, and the centerpiece of the Boulder Reservoir Regional Park, The hills above it play host to where Mork and Mindy first meet, when his ship lands near the picturesque spot she has gone on an ill fated date, with a handsy Bill Mason.
Location[]

Boulder Reservoir is located at 5565 51st St, Boulder, CO 80301, United States in the northern part of Boulder, Colorado. It stores water for the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District — also called Northern Water — and for the City of Boulder.

The Reservoir and Regional Park is managed by the City of Boulder's Department of Parks and Recreation and operated as a water supply by the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District.
About[]

Boulder Lake, almost 90 miles from Boulder, and distinct from Boulder Reservoir.
Boulder Reservoir is entirely distinct from Boulder Lake (which is a popular hiking spot located 88 miles and almost two hours drive outside of the city of Boulder, and therefore too far for it to be the location that Mork & Mindy meet and walk back from in a single night).
The city initially bought land for construction of the reservoir from the Axelson family's dairy farm and began construction on May 1, 1954. The reservoir construction was completed on Feb. 11, 1955 and began filling with water from Colorado's Western Slope through the Alva B. Adams Tunnel and the Boulder Feeder Canal, from the Colorado-Big Thompson Project that April. Some of the stored water is used as part of Boulder's municipal water supply and some is used for agricultural purposes in Boulder and Weld counties.[1]
Two months after being filled, 75 tons of sand were delivered to create a beach along the reservoir's southeast shore. The reservoir's construction cost was $1,158,027.
During the first 4th of July celebration held at the reservoir in 1955, more than 1,400 cars paid the 25 cent admission to picnic, swim and enjoy the festivities. That August, the first boating licenses were sold.
Eventually, a Quonset hut, outhouses and a concession stand were constructed. In the early 1980s, after passage of a city bond initiative, the beach was moved to its present location toward the more protected southwest "corner" of the reservoir and the facility received its first running water along with many of its current structures.[1]
According to Boulder's Parks and Recreation Department, the chief recreation activities at the park are "boating, swimming, sun bathing, water skiing, fishing, picnics, walking, running, cycling and wildlife viewing." The reservoir is popular among anglers, especially those fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, and catfish. In recent years, the State of Colorado has stocked the reservoir with black crappie, saugeye, and rainbow trout. Ice fishing is also possible when the lake is frozen.[2]
